Creat tree roots, useing filters.

Step 1:Creat a new document 400x400 pixles.

Step 2:Go up to Filter->Render->Lens flar. sue my setttings

.

Step 3:Now go to FIlter->Distort->Zigzag. use my settings.



Step 4:Duplicate the layer and go to Filter->Sketch->Chrome. use my settings.



Put the blending mode on overlay and merge layers.



Step 5:Duplicate the layer and go to Filter->Brush strokes->Spatter. Use my settings.



Step 6:Put the blending mode on lighten (Dont merge) then use your Eraser tool to erase parts of the inside of the layer.(Now merge)



Step 7:Now duplicate the layer and go to filter->distort->Spatter. (same settings as befor) Then go to Edit->Transform->Flip vertical and put the blending mode on lighten. (merge layers)



Step 8:Duplicate the layer and go to FIlter->Stylize->Glowing edges.Use my settings



Step 9:With the same layer selected Hit CTRL+ALT+U use my settings

.

Put the Blending mode on Difference and you should have something like below.
