Learn how to create a very simple effective artistic grunge effect, great for sigs!

Step 1: Start with a new 400x400 px document, and hit the letter "D" on your keyboard to reset your colors. Go up to Filter > Render > Clouds.


Step 2: Next go up to Image > Adjustments > Levels (CTRL + L). Use the settings below, your clouds will now look a bit darker.


Step 3: Next go up to Filter > Stylize > Glowing Edges... Use the settings below.


Step 4: Create a new layer (this layer should be on top), select the gradient tool, and select the default purple to orange gradient, and draw a gradient like below.


Step 5: Set the layers blending mode to "Soft Light," and then merge the layers together. Layer > Merge Down.



And your done, I think this effect comes out excellent and can be used for many ideas such as sigs, wallpapers, or small buttons.
